Dear friend,

My name is Anders; I'm the CEO of Brattoo Propaganda Software. It has been a while since my last letter. For us in the northern hemisphere summer has past. In my last letter, I focused on quality and how to easily adjust our photos. Based on the feedback I got it was appreciated. This time I’ll take a brief pause from last newsletter topics and talk about the upcoming version of macOS, macOS 10.14 Mojave and what that means. I hope that you will enjoy it.

Updates on Photos Tagger – more in the pipeline

I previously mentioned that our product Photos Tagger, which extracts all the hidden metadata about your photos and their contents from the Photos database and assigns it to your photos as keywords, now also extracts colors making your photos even easier to find.

We have more features in the pipeline for Photos Tagger which I would like to tell you about. First we are working on a much faster keyword extraction for partial updates which has been a very requested feature from those of you who have very large libraries. Another new feature, will be holiday keywords where your national holidays, such as Christmas Day, Easter day, Memorial day, will be added as keywords to your photos. This is especially useful when you would like to search for photos from holidays, where the date differ from year to year, like Easter.

Those new features will be implemented later this year. Meanwhile, you can download the current version of Photos Tagger here: https://brattoo.com/#photostagger

Duplicate Annihilator and photos in iCloud

Since my last newsletter I have received some questions regarding Duplicate Annihilator and detecting duplicates among photos that are only stored in iCloud. Yes, that is possible to do with Duplicate Annihilator and the setting Perceptive Mode. This even works when you are offline, Duplicate Annihilator can mark the duplicates making them ready so that you can delete them from iCloud once you get online again.

Duplicate Annihilator for Photos v2.0 with Perception mode is available for download from: https://brattoo.com/#photos

macOS 10.14 Mojave

It is time for a new major release of macOS. This always raises questions. I’ll try to straighten some possible question marks for you. We have done research and tests since the first Developer preview of mac OS 10.14 Mojave, and until the latest beta, and here is what we found out.

Will my applications work?

In macOS 10.14 Mojave all 32 bit applications will be disabled and only 64-bit applications will run. Duplicate Annihilator and Photos Tagger are 64-bit applications and they work. The latest versions of iPhoto and Aperture are also 64-bit applications so even if they are unsupported by Apple (since 2014) they do run in macOS 10.14 Mojave, at least for now.

If you have some special application that is crucial you can find out if it is a 32- or 64-bit application like this:

  1. Click on Apple logo > About this Mac
  2. Click on System report > Applications

Now, look for the last column 64-bit in the window that opens. “Yes” indicates that the app in question is ready to run on macOS 10.14 Mojave.

Apple Photos 4.0

With macOS 10.14 Mojave comes a brand new major version of Photos, version 4.0. Very little seems to have been changed, but most likely there are more changes under the hood. One thing is worth mentioning though. The built in Print Product Store for Books, Calendars, Cards and Prints have been removed and replaced with an option to use third party print plugins. This indicates that if you are currently working on some print projects it might be a good idea to finish those and order the prints before upgrading to macOS 10.14 Mojave and Photos 4.0.

Those of you who appreciated the darker interface in Aperture will probably like that in macOS 10.14 Mojave. You can enable Dark mode which will also make Photos darker and your images might look crisper and more vibrant. During the WWDC 2018 Keynote where macOS 10.14 Mojave was first introduced the Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke a lot about Machine Learning. Machine Learning is probably something that we will see more of in Photos, where Photos will be able to extract even more information about your photos. If this is true, it also means that Photos Tagger will be able to extract and assign even more keywords to your photos. Soon we will know.

This newsletter and previous letters

Several of our readers have requested that we resend previous emails so that they could catch up on earlier tips and information. All previous emails are available online in our Newsletter section at https://newsletter.brattoo.com

The free apps section

As I have mentioned in previous letters we have received requests on how to automate some tasks in Apple Photos or tasks related to photos. Those tasks might be tedious to work out manually but are easy for us to solve. The apps include a tool to set the Photos Titles based on filename (with or without file extension), a tool to copy and apply GPS coordinates between photos and finally a utility to set the correct file dates on image files based on the photo date stored in the metadata within the image files. You’ll find all our free apps at https://free.brattoo.com.

Upgrades

Finally I would just like to tell you that our upgrade discount for Duplicate Annihilator for Photos is still available. For only $4.95 you can upgrade any old Duplicate Annihilator license to Duplicate Annihilator for Photos and for just one dollar ($1.00) more you can upgrade any old Duplicate Annihilator license to the Duplicate Annihilator Toolbox including a family pack! This means that you get five licenses for you and your family for all versions of Duplicate Annihilator including iPhoto, Aperture, iOS and Photos for only $5.95.
